ВЕСТИ ВОДИТЬ PREFIXED VERBS 14 PREFIXES 40 MEANINGS RUSSIAN GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY In Russian language there may be many prefixes to one root of a verb, that will completely change the meaning of the verb, and simultaneously create a group of new vocabulary. We have this grammar event in English language where we call it "Phrasal Verbs" (in English they are verbs with following prepositions, for example "look up" or "look after"). We have the same grammar feature in German language (the verbs with separable or inseparable prefixes). In the Russian language there is similarity with German in this grammar aspect of verbs. Russian language has prefixes to the verbs, which, when separated, are actually prepositions (used with nouns). In all three mentioned languages we have to study these kinds of verbs as a separate grammar feature, although, basically, it is just additional vocabulary, that is a part of everyday spoken and written language. There are no any technicalities to know or to remember. Thus, technically, the grammar is easy here. Russian prefixes are always joined with the verbs, and they are located in the front part of the verb - that's why they are called "prefixes" (приставки). However, when you look at the prefixes separately, you see that they are prepositions to the Russian nouns, as I already mentioned. And often times the semantics (meaning) of the prefix in the verb will remind of the meaning of that preposition. Please do not be discouraged with my comparisons with other languages. My linguistic teaching approach is a broad comparison of similar features in a few languages. I think it is always important for a person to understand a broader pictures of things. You could have already noticed this perspective of mine from the numerous cross-cultural video posts or a few books that I have published. I appreciate your interest in my teaching approach. Thank you! Спасибо!
