Testimony of Stojan Bojadziev, IMRO leader, witness of the deportations in 1943.
Stojan G. Bojadziev, leader of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO). Chief editor of the newspaper “Целокупна България” (Undivided Bulgaria) in Skopje during WWII. Witness of the deportation of the Jews from Thrace and Macedonia in 1943. The interview was recorded by the American scholar Anne Freed and the lawyer Roy Freed in 1992. On March 1st, 1941 the German Army crossed Danube River and entered Bulgaria. Later the same day Bulgaria was forced to sign the Tripartite Pact and become ally of Germany, Italy and Japan. By April 18th the German army conquered Yugoslavia and Greece. In May Germany placed Trace (part of Northern Greece) and Macedonia back under Bulgarian administration. Trace and Macedonia were territories lost by Bulgaria during the WWI. This archival footage shows how the Bulgarian troops were welcomed in the town of Ohrid, Macedonia in May 1941.
