In the early 1960s, as the United States and the Soviet Union compete for supremacy in space, three extraordinary African American women mathematicians work at NASA’s Langley Research Center: Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, and Mary Jackson. Their calculations, engineering talent, and persistence prove vital to the human spaceflight program, but every professional step they take must be made in a world where racial prejudice and gender barriers are built even into the corridors of science. Katherine gets a chance to work with the team preparing John Glenn’s orbital flight, Dorothy fights for recognition of her work in the age of the first computers, and Mary tries to win the right to become an engineer. This biographical drama, based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, combines the history of the space race, personal dignity, and an inspiring story of women whose names long remained in the shadow of great achievements, even though without their intelligence and courage those achievements would have been impossible.
