Based on the story by Tolstoy, Sergey Bodrov's modern adaption is set in post-Soviet Dagestan during the Caucasus Wars - Russia's attempt to retain hold of the Caucasus following the break up of the USSR. A convoy is ambushed and two soldiers are taken hostage and kept in a mountain aul. Their master hopes to exchange them for his son, who is being held in a Russian prison. Very nice movie about mixing of Russian-Caucasian cultures. Filmed in Derbent and the village of Richa, which locals serving as extras.
