In Jackson in the early sixties, Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan returns home after college with the dream of becoming a writer and begins to notice more sharply the injustice her surroundings have grown used to treating as normal. In the homes of white families, Black maids raise other people’s children, keep households running, and guard other people’s secrets, while remaining almost powerless and constantly humiliated. Skeeter decides to write down their stories, and the first to agree to this dangerous conversation are the wise Aibileen Clark and the sharp, unbroken Minny Jackson. Every confession could cost the women their jobs, safety, and future, but silence has already become too heavy. This drama based on Kathryn Stockett’s novel combines personal destinies, social tension, and a story of courage in a society where the truth has to be spoken in whispers.
