Tair 3 phs - A day at the Zoo (amazing 40+ years old lens)
This has to be the most impressive (Soviet)vintage lens that I have! About a year ago I did an unboxing video of the Zenit Photosniper kit (that comes with a Helios 44-2 and this Tair(таир) 3) but ever since that day I hadn't really used this lens. So I decided to visit the local Zoo (Rotterdam Blijdorp) to see what this 40+ years old lens can do when adapted to a full-frame Sony A7iii I took most shots wide open at f4.5 An indication of how far away I was from the animals: The giraffes were really close by, so close that I could literally touch them if I wanted, so in this case a 300mm lens was a bit too close. In other shots the animals were like 10/20/30 meters away. Rhino: 10 meters Lions: 20 meters Polar Bear: 20 meters Elephant: 30 meters Monkeys: 10 meters Flamingos: 15 meters Cynomys/Prairie dogs about 3 meters Hyena: 15 meters Bison: 20 meters Conclusion: this lens is great, especially when you consider that it is 40 years old, and it was designed for photography and not for video. It's a manual focus lens, so it's not easy to use when your subject is moving. Also without a tripod a 300mm lens can be very shaky, but luckily there were many railings in the zoo on which I could rest the lens.
