Dave Stutler has remembered since childhood a strange encounter in an antique shop, after which his life went wrong and his belief in magic became a secret better left untold. Years later, he has become an awkward but brilliant physics student in New York and once again crosses paths with Balthazar Blake — an ancient sorcerer, a student of Merlin himself, who is convinced that Dave is the one capable of stopping the return of the powerful Morgana le Fay. As the young man tries to deal with spells, first love, and his own fear of being a failure, Balthazar prepares him for a battle with his former ally Maxim Horvath, who dreams of freeing the dark sorceress.
