The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (movie, 2008)
Eight-year-old Bruno lives in Berlin during World War II and understands almost nothing about the adult world, where loud words about duty and service gradually push warmth, freedom, and childhood carelessness out of his home. When his father, an SS officer, is transferred to a new post, the family moves to a bleak house near a camp, which Bruno mistakes for a strange farm behind barbed wire. Loneliness and curiosity lead the boy to meet Shmuel — a Jewish child on the other side of the fence — and a naive friendship grows between them, unable to fully grasp the cruelty of the world around them. This drama based on John Boyne’s novel shows the tragedy of the Holocaust through a limited child’s perspective, where innocence collides with a system of hatred, and simple questions become more frightening than adult explanations.
