BMW E60 E61 How to Replace Fuel Filter Facelift LCI

Changing the fuel filter on a BMW E90 320d is a straightforward job because the filter is located externally under the car, rather than inside the fuel tank. Compatible Models The fuel filter part and the installation procedure are identical for almost all BMW "E-series" diesel models of that era. This includes: • 3 Series (E90, E91, E92, E93): All diesel variants (318d, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d). • 1 Series (E81, E82, E87, E88): 116d, 118d, 120d, 123d. • X1 (E84): All diesel versions (18d, 20d, 23d, 25d). • 5 Series (E60, E61 Facelift/LCI): The later diesel models use the same inline filter setup. • X5/X6 (E70, E71): 3.0d and 3.5d models use the same logic and location. Replacement Process • Access: The filter is located under the chassis, roughly beneath the driver's seat (left-hand drive cars). You will need to remove the plastic underbody shield (usually held by 8mm or 10mm screws). • Removal: • Unclip the electrical connector for the fuel heater/water sensor. • Loosen the mounting bracket holding the filter. • Disconnect the two fuel lines. Note: Some fuel will spill out, so have a container ready. • Transfer the Sensor: Most new filters do not come with the heating element/sensor. You must remove it from the old filter and slide it into the new one. • Crucial: Always use a new O-ring on the sensor to prevent air leaks. • Flow Direction: Ensure the arrow on the filter (FLOW) points toward the front of the engine. Priming the System (Bleeding) Modern BMWs do not have a manual hand primer. You must remove the air from the lines before starting the engine to protect the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP). • The Ignition Method: Insert the key and press the Start button (without your foot on the brake/clutch) to turn on the ignition. You will hear the fuel pump in the tank hum. Leave it for 1 minute. Repeat this 3 or 4 times. • The Software Method (Best Practice): Use a diagnostic tool like ISTA or INPA to trigger the "Fuel Pump Register" or "Bleed" function. This runs the pump continuously for several minutes, ensuring all air is purged back to the tank. Pro Tips • Clamps: If your car still has the original "one-time use" Ear Clamps (Oetiker clamps), you will need to cut them off and replace them with high-quality stainless steel screw-type hose clamps. • Cleanliness: Ensure no dirt enters the fuel lines while the filter is disconnected; even tiny particles can damage the fuel injectors. #automobile #cars #mechanic #mechanicrepairteam #shortsfeed #mechanical #repair #toyota #vw #volkswagen #bmw #mercedes #carsfix    Youtube:     https://www.youtube.com/@sevtauto9289     https://www.youtube.com/@PetersGarage111 If the video was useful give us “thumbs up” and consider subscribing to the channel to see more videos!
