In 1979, in a bid to secure oil supplies in Saudi Arabia, the Soviet Union launched an invasion of Afghanistan to use the nation as a jumping-off point for further movements. However, intense Mujahideen resistance supported by the United States turned the planned-to-be quick military operation into a decade-long slog akin to that of the United States in Vietnam, ending in 1989 with the Soviet forces withdrawing after suffering roughly 665,000 casualties.
